How to keep your phone alive during a long gaming session

June 15, 2026 · Lukas Berger

Nothing ends a gaming session faster than a dying battery on a train with no outlet. Over years of testing, a few habits have saved us more playtime than any single setting.

Start with the screen. Brightness is the biggest drain by far, so drop it a notch or two below comfortable — your eyes adjust in a minute. If a game offers a 30fps cap or a battery mode, turn it on; on most phone games you genuinely won't notice the difference.

Background apps matter more than people think. Close the five tabs and the chat apps syncing every few seconds before a long session. On many devices there's a dedicated game mode that silences notifications and frees up resources — worth enabling.

Finally, learn which genres eat power. Racing games and 3D action titles run the processor hard, while turn-based RPGs and farming sims barely sip. Plan your flight or commute accordingly: save the heavy games for when you're plugged in.
